Piercing Aftercare & FAQs

Keep It Clean, Dry, and Hands-Off

  • Avoid touching the piercing. Keep hands off to prevent bacteria and irritation.
  • No lotions, oils, or ointments. Avoid products like tea tree oil, Neosporin, or Aquaphor.

Cleaning Routine

Wash your hands thoroughly before cleaning the piercing.

Apply a small amount of diluted antibacterial soap (e.g., Dr. Bronner’s or Dial) to the piercing.

(Skip this step if you are using a saline wound wash)

Rinse thoroughly with distilled water or a saline wound wash.

We carry NeilMed Piercing Aftercare Spray at all of our locations.

Handling Irritation

  • If your piercing is bumped or irritated (e.g., by pets or hugs), use a saline spray to soothe it.
  • Avoid over-cleaning, as this can delay healing, cause scarring, or increase the risk of infection.

Downsizing & Follow-Up

  • Your piercing is initially placed with longer jewelry to accommodate swelling.
  • Visit us in the shop or consult your piercer about downsizing once sensitivity decreases to avoid migration or discomfort.
  • Follow-up timing varies by piercing—check with your piercer for specific recommendations.

Healing Tips

  • Maintain overall good health to aid the healing process.
  • Avoid sleeping on the piercing to reduce irritation.
  • If your piercing is exposed to shampoo or other products, rinse it with saline promptly.

Piercing FAQs

Do You Pierce Children’s Ears?

Yes! We pierce children’s ears as young as eight years old with select piercers. Please call ahead to confirm availability and refer to our ID & Documents Requirements page for proper documentation and ID guidelines.

Anatomy-Specific Piercings

  • Certain piercings (e.g., navel, oral, or industrial) may require specific anatomy.
  • If a piercer is unsure about your anatomy, they may refer you to another piercer for a second opinion or someone better suited to assess it.

Trouble Healing?

  • For healing concerns, consult your original piercer directly or visit the shop.
  • Some piercings can be stubborn and may not heal perfectly, even when everything is done right – it’s not always the result of aftercare or technique. Everyones body is different, and not all healing issues are preventable.
  • If we did the original piercing and you’re experiencing issues, we’re happy to take a look and help troubleshoot or provide potential solutions – as long as no adjustments or jewelry changes were made elsewhere.
  • If your piercing was done at a different shop and you need help, you’re welcome to come in. We’ll do our best to help get things on track or offer next steps.
  • Our piercers are highly experienced with healing issues and will give you honest, practical advice – but please note, they are not medical professionals. In some cases, you may be advised to seek medical care.
